Snow at the Beach: When Deerfield Plantation Turned White
Living in Deerfield Plantation, we’re used to mild winters, salty air, and maybe the occasional chilly morning walk. But this winter surprised just about everyone when nearly four inches of snow blanketed our beach community. Snow at the beach is rare enough; four inches made it unforgettable.
Palm trees dusted in white, quiet streets, and neighbors stepping outside just to take it all in reminded us how special (and unpredictable) coastal living can be.
Freezing Temperatures at the Coast
Along with the snow came freezing temperatures, something coastal homes aren’t always designed for. While inland areas may be more accustomed to hard freezes, beach communities like Deerfield Plantation don’t experience them often — which makes preparation especially important.
Extended cold snaps can impact:
- Exterior plumbing and hose bibs
- Irrigation systems
- Pool equipment
- Attics and crawl spaces
- Older homes or properties with exposed pipes
Even a short period below freezing can cause costly damage if a home isn’t properly winterized.
Winterizing Tips for Coastal Homes
Whether this was your first snowy beach winter or just a reminder to stay prepared, here are some smart winterizing tips for Deerfield homeowners:
Protect Your Plumbing
- Disconnect and store outdoor hoses
- Cover exterior faucets with insulated covers
- Let indoor faucets drip slightly during extreme cold
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
Irrigation & Pool Systems
- Shut off and drain irrigation systems
- Ensure pool pumps are running or properly winterized
- Cover exposed pool plumbing when temperatures drop
Attic & Crawl Space Check
- Make sure attic access points are sealed
- Check insulation around pipes
- Close foundation vents during freezing temperatures
HVAC & Interior Prep
- Replace HVAC filters before winter
- Set thermostats to consistent temperatures, even when away
- If leaving town, don’t turn the heat off completely
Coastal Living Means Being Ready for Anything
One of the joys of living in Deerfield Plantation is the laid-back beach lifestyle — but this snowfall was a great reminder that even coastal communities need to be prepared for the unexpected. Snow at the beach may be rare, but being proactive protects your home and gives you peace of mind.
As we head back to warmer days, this winter will definitely be one neighbors will talk about for years to come — the winter Deerfield turned into a snow globe.
